The Body Part Debrief

I want to introduce you to the activity that started it all – The Body Part Debrief. It’s simple, powerful, and was the very first tool our founder, Michelle Cummings, ever created. Back when she was leading adventure therapy groups, she needed a creative way to help participants reflect on their experiences. So she grabbed a heart, a brain, a hand, and a foot from a toy store- and something clicked. People opened up. They connected the symbols to real emotions, real takeaways, and real growth.

That moment sparked what would eventually become the activity that made her open her company, Training Wheels. The Body Part Debrief is still one of our go-to tools, and it’s especially useful with groups that need help finding words or making sense of a shared experience. Whether you’re processing a tough topic or closing out a session, this activity gives people a gentle, playful way to reflect and connect.

The Body Part Debrief is one of the most versatile reflection tools you can use in group or individual work. Each object – ike a brain, heart, hand, foot, lungs, or spine – represents a different part of the processing experience. Participants are invited to choose one and reflect on a related question: What did you learn today (brain)? What feelings did you experience (heart)? How did you help or receive help (hand)? What’s your next step (foot)? The objects provide a concrete, visual way to make abstract feelings more accessible.

This activity is especially effective with participants who struggle to verbalize emotions or who feel overwhelmed in traditional debriefs. It gives them a choice of where to focus and lets them share as much or as little as they feel ready for. Because it’s metaphor-based and non-threatening, the Body Part Debrief works well across a wide range of ages and populations.

What makes this tool so powerful is its flexibility. You can use it at the end of a session, after a tough conversation, or to reflect on a shared activity or event. It’s hands-on, adaptable to any theme, and creates rich discussion without forcing anyone too far out of their comfort zone. The Body Part Debrief helps people reflect, connect, and move forward with insight.
